Nature’s valley is a photographers paradise offering endless photo opportunities. Henk's extensive experience with shooting landscapes in the Valley coupled with his years of experience as a photography lecturer make him the ideal instructor for this small group retreat aimed at improving the photography skills of participants in practice.

Participants get to choose two genres that they’d like training in from any of the following options…


Gain experience in shooting landscapes under various lighting conditions on site visits with expert guidance on hand.


Head out into nature after dark to discover more about photographing the Milky Way and star trails in all their brilliance.


Spend time with the ocean, learning to capture the moods and movement of the sea along the rugged coastline.


Have fun playing with light on night shoots. Explore your creativity with new light-painting techniques.  


Bask in the moonlight as you put new knowledge to the test, practising the art of moonscape photography.

Image Processing

Hone your image editing skills using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance your technical capabilities.

Material Covered on retreat

Every retreat is different based on the season, weather and interests of the participants, but you can expect to do most of the following:

  • – optimising your exposure
  • – dealing with compositional challenges 
  • – shooting in the golden hour & the blue hour
  • – using your shutter speed for creative effects
  • – photographing fynbos flowers
  • – reading the weather, tides, moon and stars
  • – landscape photography at night
  • – astrophotography techniques

What to Expect

Look forward to a relaxed couple of days where you’ll eat, sleep and drink photography. Yet there is enough free time to explore the beautiful area or catch up on some sleep. The main idea is to relax, have fun and learn new techniques in a comfortable environment with delicious food.

Photographic Equipment Requirements

You do not need to bring a ton of high tech equipment with you on this retreat. Here are a few guidelines and suggestions for what to bring:

Essential Equipment:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera 
  • Tripod
  • Wide-angle lens

Optional Equipment:

  • Laptop with Lightroom
  • Long lens (300mm)
  • Macro lens

Skill Level Requirements

The retreat is intended for intermediate to advanced photographers. The focus is on digital photography. Analogue shooters are also more than welcome, but unfortunately, there are no processing facilities on site.

What to Bring - highly recommended

  • Warm jacket/windbreaker
  • Raincoat or waterproof jacket
  • Torch and/or headlamp
